School Graduates get a taste of a scientific career at LZH

LZH | Discovering a career with practical relevance: Young scientists have started a Voluntary Scientific Year or Niedersachsen Technikum at the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) in order to start a career in science even before their studies.

Voluntary Scientific Year at the LZH

On 1 September 2024, Johannes Dreher and Bennet Henke began their Voluntary Scientific Year (FWJ) in the Optical Components department at the LZH. The two will spend a year actively working on research projects at the LZH and gain valuable insights into scientific work before starting their studies or careers.

The LZH has been offering young people this opportunity for over 10 years. The first alumni have already returned to the research institute as doctoral students.

Niedersachsen Technikum at the LZH

Merle Munke, Zeynep Dumlu and Klara Weber are also completing a Niedersachsen Technikum at the LZH. This six-month programme is aimed at young women with (technical) high school diplomas and gives them the opportunity to find out whether the STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) match their interests.

During their time at the LZH, all five can take part in their first lectures at Leibniz Universität Hannover, and learn how to solder and programme, among other things.

FWJ and Niedersachsen Technikum: Apply now for 2025!

High school graduates can apply for the FWJ every year until 31 January. Applications are submitted centrally via Hannover Medical School.

The Niedersachsen Technikum is aimed specifically at female (technical) high school graduates who are interested in a STEM profession. Applications are made via the participating universities, with the LZH co-operating with both Leibniz University Hannover and Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
