Dear Readers,

as holidays are approaching, streets start getting crowded, because everybody is driving home for Christmas. To minimize traffic-related air pollution, the joint research project “Lightweight Forging” is working on energy-efficient vehicles – and IFUM’s contribution is the development of a weight- and efficiency-optimized gear wheel.

Reunited with one’s family, there is always some relative complaining about his hearing aids. Researchers at LZH want to find a remedy: They are currently developing ergonomically shaped earmolds that are produced on a 3D printer.

After hearing aids have helped return life to normal, the family can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere under the Christmas tree and ponder the potentials of digitalization. Perhaps the online-based learning platform OpenDigiMedia, being developed by IFW together with the Institute of Vocational Education and Adult Education (IFBE), helps take away the fear of the new trends.

Process-reliable definition of subsurface properties

IW/IFW | The quality of a component is dependent on its subsurface properties. However, their process-reliable definition can only be reached by component-specific production control. By the use of soft sensors and a learning process model, the production system shall modify process parameters autonomously.
