30 years of research and development: Due to the interdisciplinary cooperation of natural scientists and engineers, the LZH succeeded in recognizing and influencing many promising research fields at an early stage. These include, among others, diode-pumped solid-state lasers, the characterization of optical components, the laser-based joining of lightweight structures, the laser-assisted eye surgery, the processing of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP), hybrid welding processes, the Scanning Laser Optical Tomography and, last but not least, the laser systems for the LIGO gravitational wave detectors that have finally proven the theory of general relativity.
