Christian Lamping’s Master thesis wins IPH Future Award 2019

IPH | How can drones fly autonomously across a factory? This was the research topic of Christian Lamping’s Master thesis. His promising and innovative concept was honoured with the IPH Future Award 2019.

In future, camera drones will revolutionise factory planning. On their flight across a factory, they take thousands of pictures which can be used to create a three-dimensional factory layout. The respective method has been developed by researchers of the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover (IPH). However, today’s drones are still controlled manually. A more efficient solution would be an autonomously flying drone – a question that Christian Lamping tackled in his Master thesis. To make his vision come true, he brought manifold systems together, for example, laser scanners, acceleration sensors, gyroscopes, drone controls, etc..
For his innovative concept, the 24-year old industrial engineer received the IPH Future Award 2019. Professor Ludger Overmeyer presented him with the award certificate and the prize money of 500 euros. Since 2016, IPH honours the best final student thesis of the year. All students writing their Bachelor, Master or Diploma thesis at IPH can participate in the contest.
