Laser-processed composites on the way to series production

LZH | A funding initiative has brought the laser processing of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) a step closer to series production. Even after the end of the funding, the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) continues optimizing these processes.

Due to a funding initiative for photonic lightweight construction, carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) have made important steps towards series production. „Repairing 3D CFRP parts is still time-consuming,” explains Sven Blümel from the LZH. “We can now, however, scarf components with curved surfaces with short process times as a preparation for repair. Then, the scarfed areas are closed with a so-called patch, an accurately fitting replacement part. This is a major step in increasing the lifetime of CFRP parts.”
Nine projects were carried out under the roof of the initiative. The results are pointers to the future, and the partners will start further research and development activities from here.
