New forming simulator: Gleeble 3800 launched at IFUM

IFUM | For a more comprehensive determination of material properties: At the Institute of Forming Technology and Machines (IFUM), the Gleeble system has been installed at the Department Material Characterisation and Simulation. It is even suitable for simulating bulk metal forming processes.

The Gleeble system opens up new prospects, helping IFUM to tackle future challenges in the field of material characterisation and forming simulation. The researchers use simulation-based methods for the design of modern product development processes. Through this physical simulation of stress, material properties can be determined to model materials as realistically as possible.
The Gleeble 3800 is a physical forming simulator, capable of exerting various thermal-mechanical loads on material specimens. The thermal-hydraulic servo system allows for stroke rates of 2,000 millimetres per second, tensile loads of up to 100 kilonewton and static compressive loads of up to 200 kilonewton. With these exceptionally high test forces, the Gleeble 3800 is also suitable for the physical simulation of bulk metal forming processes. Moreover, a large variety of different specimen sizes and geometries can be used.
