Newly awarded: Metallography in materials science

IW | Those who investigate metal under the microscope may discover amazing things: sometimes shining vivid colors, sometimes pictures of kangaroos or dolphins. Two staff members of the Institute of Materials Science (IW) have been awarded for their exceptional pictures.

Materials scientists gain deep insights through metallographic preparation – Microscopic images visualize relationships or processes in materials which are for example caused by temperature influences or deformations. The best pictures are awarded on the annual meeting of the German Association of Materials Science.
This year, two IW staff members got two first places. Ute Teuber scored in the category "General Metallography": She presented the color photo of an aluminium extrusion profile (Figure 2). In the category "Humorous Metallography", Mareike Reiter was prized for the micrograph of a magnesium sample which she had turned into a hidden image, showing among others a kangaroo and a dolphin (Figure 3).
During the last years, the metallography team has already succeeded six times in getting first places. In 2011, Ute Teuber was awarded for her photo revealing little E.T. (Figure 4).
