Yachts are not only luxury goods, but also an economic factor. Germany is market leader in building mega yachts, i.e. yachts of more than 60 metres length. To further strengthen this industry and improve production, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) is supporting the project “FINISH“.
Aim of the research project is to optimize the surface coating process for mega yachts – by creating a smooth surface with as little filler as possible.
First of all, the yacht under construction is measured with a new laser scanning system. Based on the point cloud derived, the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) is researching on the development of an optimized design model, reducing the amount of filler material needed to create an aesthetic surface. The core topic is the identification and mathematical description of aesthetic criteria. After the coating, the created surface is to be evaluated automatically based on objective criteria.
