“As-built“ scan enables creation of digital twins

IFW | Creating material flow simulations for bottleneck analyses, factory planning or stock analyses requires a lot of initial effort. IFW is currently developing a procedure that scans the production facilities and then creates a digital simulation model in an automated process.

Creating simulation models is a complex process – the reason why many companies do without them, passing up productivity and quality potentials. Especially in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME), there is often a lack of programming knowledge that is needed to develop valid simulation models. Within the scope of the project DigiTwin, IFW and project partners are jointly developing a service concept: A scan of the production facilities and downstream object recognition enable an automated generation of simulation models. The result is a scaled digital model that is updated with further information in an automated process. Through implementation of a standardized procedure, the integration of company specifics is possible with minimum effort. Apart from model creation, the novel approach is also suitable for updates of existing simulation models to achieve valid planning results.
