IW | Up to now, tool steels have been hardened by heat treatment. However, deep-freezing could improve wear resistance even more. For this reason, researchers at the Institute of Materials Science (IW) are investigating a method called cryogenic treatment, i.e. deep-freezing of steel using liquid nitrogen.

IMPT | Researchers of the Institute of Micro Production Technology (IMPT) developed a magnetic data storage, enabling information to be stored directly on the surface of non-magnetic components.

ITA | Researchers of the Institute of Transportation and Automation Technology (ITA) are currently investigating an automatable method for splice preparation of steel cord conveyor belts. Instead of using numerous manual cutting processes, steel cords shall be stripped using water jet technology – a quicker and more precise solution.

IW | The Technical Advisory Board of the Institute of Materials Science (IW) celebrates its 25th anniversary with talks, live experiments and the presentation of the new X-ray microscope. The event takes place on 24 November 2017 at the Hannover Centre for Production Technology (PZH).

match | Whether sensors, pacemakers or clockworks: Wherever high-precision part assembly is indispensable, conventional robots will reach their limits. For research purposes, the Institute of Assembly Technology (match) has therefore installed a flexible high-precision assembly cell.

IFA/IPH | In October, professionals and managerial staff will have the opportunity to learn the basics of how to build a new factory or how to expand or reorganise their existing one. In the practical seminar “Factory Planning“, experts will impart comprehensive knowledge which can be applied by the workshop participants immediately.

LZH | Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) can be used to replace steel sheets, and thus lower the weight of automobiles and aircrafts. However, repairs are often expensive. The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is working on making repairs less expensive and more efficient.

IFUM | Apart from new materials and production processes, large-batch production of lightweight components also requires novel simulation strategies. Researchers at IFUM are currently developing calculation methods which are suitable for predicting the forming behaviour of fibre-reinforced plastics.

IPH | "The Future of Tool Making" – this is the motto of the tool- and mold-making work group (AKWZB) celebrating the 20th anniversary. The event is scheduled for the 27 September 2017 at the Institut für Integrierte Produktion Hannover (IPH) gGmbH.

LZH | Dr.-Ing. Oliver Suttman, as head of department at the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH), has developed laser technologies apart from those of classical metal processing. He was awarded the WLT prize of the German Scientific Laser Society (WLT) for his research.

ITA | This year, it was the fourth summer workshop in St Petersburg organized by the Institute of Transport and Automation Technology (ITA). Students from Hanover visited their partner institute at Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University and explored the City of the Tsars.
